Greater China Design Competition
2020-2021
10th GCDC Self-Balancing Robot (2020/21) via Zoom on 30 April 2022
Champion: HKU
According to statistics, 42% of construction site fatalities involved falls. Trip and Falls, falls from high heights or scaffolding or rolling over of heavy machine are among the most common cause of injury. Hence, development of an active balancing device could be a solution.
This year’s challenge focuses on designing an Active Balancing Device of which can be used for balancing an object at different slope or landscape.
2019-2020
9th GCDC Climbing Robot for Removing Light Bulb held at the University of Hong Kong on 27 March 2021
Champion: HKU
Many trees like coconut tree, and palm trees are so tall that climbing them becomes risky. Hence harvesting fruits and nuts and maintaining them becomes difficult. So development of an autonomous tree climbing robot is a solution. This year’s challenge focuses on designing a low cost climbing robot of which can be used for removing a light bulb.
2018-2019
8th GCDC Energy Relay (2018/19) at University of Macau (tentative on 23 and 24 March 2019)
The University of Macau New Campus
Champion: HKU
This year, participants are required to design an energy relay system consists of four cars with different sources of energy, e.g. electrical, elastic energy, solar power, … etc. Each car was required to complete a 4m (L) X 0.5m (W) width path and trigger another car, hence, to finish a total of 12 meters straight path.
2017-2018
7th GCDC Unmanned Robots for Relief (2017/18) held at South China University of Technology Guangzhou College on 24 and 25 March 2018
Champion: PolyU
On behalf of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) Hong Kong branch, a worldwide non-profit professional organization for mechanical engineers, we take pleasure to announce the 7th Greater China Design Competition (7th GCDC) to be held on 24-28 March 2018.
As you may be aware, the 7th GCDC, which bundles the highlight event of the IMechE and Universities, will be our signature initiative in 2017/18. It is an university student design competition among Hong Kong, Guangzhou and Macau universities. The aim is to providing a platform for our engineering students to demonstrate their engineering knowledge, while in parallel strengthen their presentation skills by designing an innovative prototype design on the topics range from environmental to social issues.
The topics for the past four years GCDCs are Automatic Material Sorter (2011/12), Potential Energy Car (2012/13), Material Transporter (2013/14), Rocks Collector (2014/15), Remote Inspection Robot (2015/16) and Mine Industry Handling Robot (2016/17).
This is particularly important among the young generation, whose attraction to the professions is critical in ensuring continuous engineering excellence to help drive our world forward. Engineering is much more relevant to our daily lives than perhaps it is given credit for. Considering the macro and local issues faced by the community, GCDC will focus on energy, transport and the environment, exploring and showcasing possible, often fun and innovative engineering solutions.
